Can’t I Just Sleep In?

I wake up and rub the sleepies out of my eyes.  I feels like a Monday but its a Tuesday.  I am lazy, and not wanting to get out of my bed.  Can’t I just sleep in?  I don’t want to go to work and face the day.  I don’t want to face my homework.  I am nervous about the new situations I will face today.  Maybe I could just take the day off?!

Then I heard Jesus whisper in my ear.

“Hi this Jesus, I will be walking by your side today, giving you strength for the day. Now, get up, we have some work to do!”

Well,  if I have Jesus by my side, then the day doesn’t seem so daunting, right? How amazing is this?  The Savior of the world is going to help me, going to walk with me!

Time to wake up and face the day–face the day with the hope of Christ in my life.  Now I think I can do this!

If you are feeling like I did this morning, rely on Christ’s strength.  With His help, we can make today a great day!

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Rejection: Is it Part of God’s Plan?

I have struggled with rejection my whole life.  I try not to let it bother me, but I have to admit it gets to me.  This morning as I was getting ready for work, I was dwelling on rejection from past friends and peers. Why would God allow for me to go through such painful experiences?  Then a thought popped into my head, and I am pretty sure God had something to do with it.  Rejection is part of God’s plan and it has a purpose.

What if there is a reason why I and many other believers have gone through periods of rejection? And what if that reason is because God has a perfect plan–He is protecting us from relationships and friendships that aren’t right for us.

As much as it is hard to be rejected, knowing that God has a perfect plan for my life is comforting.  He knows what is good for my life and who is good in my life.  No matter what, I know Jesus loved me and you so much that He was willing to die for us.  He thinks we are beautiful, special, valuable, and lovable.  No amount of rejection can keep us from the love of Christ.  Now when I look back on those times when I was rejected, I realize that God had a plan even in that difficult time.  We serve a wonderful God!

If you are feeling discouraged and rejected today, know Jesus loves you more than you could ever know.  He thinks you are beautiful, special, valuable, and lovable.

Jesus, Faith, and GPS

A few weeks ago, my mom and I were looking for a new thrift store.  We were having a hard time finding the store, so I decided to enter the address in my iPhone.  Finally, we were on our way.  The cool thing about my GPS is that it shows you when you go off course and it has a blinking pin right on your destination.  So, if you pay close attention, you will successfully get to your destination.  Easy enough right?  Even with the GPS, we had some trouble finding the store, but we finally got there (We are directionally challenged).

I started to think about my Christian walk.  Wouldn’t it be awesome if Jesus gave us the coordinates of our destinations in life?  Then I could just enter it into my phone and know exactly where I  was going.  The blinky pin would be on my destination and it would show me when I was going off course.  That would be so cool!  But, it doesn’t work that way.  If Jesus gave us a GPS then we wouldn’t need faith to trust Him because we would know our life plan exactly, moment by moment.  One thing is for sure, if we have a personal relationship with Jesus, we know our final destination—heaven.  God doesn’t give us details instructions of where we are going and what bumps in the road we might face, but He does give us His perfect peace and His guidance and direction.  We are able to come to Him in prayer and ask for His guidance and will for our life.

If you are anything like me, you are a major planner.  I plan out my day, my week, my month, my school year, etc.  I plan what I am going to wear, what I am going to eat for breakfast, and what I am going to do after work.  Let’s just say I am a control freak.  Being a control freak and follow the guidance of someone; how does that work?

I am reminded of something my mom said today.  We were walking around a park that we aren’t too familiar with.  I had been to the park recently, so I knew my way around the park better than my mom did.  I told her, “Follow me, I know where to go.”  She didn’t hear me, and she started walking another path.  Then I remind her that I knew the way.  She said,”I guess I am not very good at following.”

The same is true in my Christian walk.  I am not very good at following.  Jesus is telling me, “Come on, Sarah, I already have a path for you, just follow me.  I know the way.”  But, I tell Jesus, “Sure, I will follow you, but first I want to do a few things.  I need to take a detour.”  But, that is not following Jesus.  If I want to be a follower of Christ, I have to give up my plans, and follow Jesus.  His plans and timing are far better than mine.

I came to a conclusion today.  I am missing the point; I am missing the boat.  I say I am a follower of Christ, but I am actually following Him?  Am I trusting Him?   I have been struggling because I want to make my own plans.  I have been going a million miles an hour trying to find a Christian mate.  But, today Jesus nudged me and said, “Sarah, I got it under control, just follow me and everything will fall into place.”  I decided to stop worrying about finding a mate; if it’s God will, it will happen.  Follow Jesus.  He is smarter and a better planner than all of us combined!

Follow the Call

“And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.” Matthew 4:18-20 NKJV

I was reading my Bible last night and I came across Matthew 4:18-20.  As I was reading I was struck something.  When Jesus told the fishermen to follow Him, “they immediately left their nets and follow Him.”  The fishermen didn’t spend time thinking “Should I go or should I wait until I’m ready” or “What about my business?  How will I make a living?”  Can you imagine sitting at work or sitting at your house, and Jesus comes to you and tells you to leave it all for Him?  The fisherman are such an example for us.

How many times has God called us to do something and we were hesitant about it?  Maybe we thought, “Right now this just doesn’t work for me.  What about my family and job?  I am just going to have to think about it.”  If we lived our lives like the fishermen and whenever God called us to do something, we did it, how much better off we would be?  God has a plan for each one of us, so when He calls us to do something, we should be like the fishermen and act immediately.

When we are called to do something for God does it mean that it will be easy?  No, not at all.  The fisherman had to give up their business, their livelihood to follow Christ.  In the process of following God’s plan for our life, we might be faced with difficult circumstances. We will have to give up the life we planned for in exchange for the life God has planned for us.  This means we might have to give up the job we really wanted or the things we have planned for our life.  We might have to give up where we live or who we hang out with.  In the end, it will all be worth it because we have an opportunity to be used by the God of the universe to do great things for Him!

One of the most beautiful parts of this story is how Jesus chose average, run-of-the-mill people for His service.  He didn’t choose the smartest, most educated people—He chose regular people like you and me.  God can use people just like you and me to do great things for His kingdom.  We have to remember to listen to His plans and follow His call in our lives.  It might not be easy at times, but following God is definitely worth it!

Let God Take Over

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”  Matthew 11:28

“Stop trying to do it on your own.  Stop trying to do everything in your own strength.”—I hear God whispering those very phrases into my ear.  Why do I keep trying to go this life alone?  Why do I try to make my own plans?  God is the one in control, He is the one who has all the strength and wisdom.  And the best part is, He isn’t selfish; He gives us strength, wisdom, and rest, we just have to ask for it.

If you are like me today, give all your  burdens, stresses, worries, and long to-do lists over to God.  He is the one in control of your life; lean on Him for guidance and strength because if you try to do it on your own, you will be left weary and exhausted.  He promises to give us rest and take our burdens, but we have to take that first step of faith.  If you are having a difficult week full of worries and stresses.  If you keep trying to carry your sins, regrets, and past with you.  Give all of it over to God.  Once you release all of your burdens, God will restore you and fill you with incredible strength and peace.

Let’s stop trying to do everything on our own.  It is time we let God take over!

Making Time for God

I am a big fan of the folks at Blimey Cow.  They are a group of hilarious, young Christians who are transparent in their struggles and walk with Christ.  Their Messy Monday video really hit home today.  How many times I have been to busy to “pencil in” God?  I shouldn’t be pencilling Him in because he should already be in my day.

I use to think that if I read my Bible and prayed so often in a day that I would be a good Christian.  Don’t get me wrong, it so important to have quiet time with God, but our relationship with Him is more than spending 30 minutes a day reading the Bible.  Our relationship with Christ should be evident in all areas of our life, in school, in work, and in home.  Our faith should be evident by the way we love and serve others.  Just like in the video, you can read you Bible but if you don’t put what you’ve learned to practice than how will others know you are even a Christ follower? I Am Loved

Feelings of loneliness, pain, and grief, you might be feeling unloved today.  Maybe your girlfriend or boyfriend broke your heart in two or maybe your family hurt you and they don’t show you the love you deserve.  You could be in school today feeling alone and rejected.  Feeling unworthy of love, you might be in a place where you want to give up.

Dear friend, please do not give up!  You are more loved than you could ever know.  Jesus died to save you and bring you new life.  He died for you and He wants you to know how much He loves you.  There isn’t even a way to measure how much love Christ has for us.  No amount of earthy measuring system could come close to measuring the love of Christ.

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 [Read more...]

Jesus is My Hero

Today at church the worship band played my favorite song, “Hero” by Abandon.  I thought I would share it!  Happy Easter!

Unless We, Who Will?

After watching Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax, I found a quote that reminded me how important it is for us to make a difference for Christ.  I wrote about it in an earlier post, but I felt like I needed to expand on the topic of loving your neighbor.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

If we don’t help, who will? We are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus, and we cannot ignore that call. Sometimes we get busy in our daily life and say, “I am too busy, that’s somebody else’s job to help that person.”  If God has called you to act, it is your job to listen and help.

I am reminded of the story of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10: 25-37.  When asked by a man how a person receives eternal life, Jesus responded in verse 27.  “He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”  In verse 29, the man asks who his neighbor was.  [Read more...]

Let My Life Be the Proof

I just added For King & Country’s new record, Crave, to my Rdio account, and I am loving every minute of listening to it!  I already had their EP and was in love with “Busted Heart.”  One song in particular stuck out to me today, “The Proof of You Love.”   I played it for an hour straight!  The song reminds me to show love to those around me because as Christians we are called to be God’s light in the dark world.  There are hurting people all around us that desperately need to be shown love and to hear about a loving Savior.  They are crying out for use to reach out to them and show them God’s love.   [Read more...]
